Marine Park
Protectedunder water
Bonaire is known worldwide for what is under its surface. The Bonaire National Marine Park, managed by STINAPA, protects all life below and around the island. The moment you step into the water, you are swimming in a nature reserve.

The Nature Fee is mandatory
Anyone entering the water to swim, snorkel or dive needs a valid Nature Fee (STINAPA tag). The money goes straight into conservation. Buy it online before you step aboard.

The golden rules
- 01Never touch the coral — even a light knock does damage.
- 02Take nothing, leave nothing. The reef is not a souvenir shop.
- 03Stay horizontal above the reef so you do not brush anything.
- 04Use reef-safe sunscreen only.
- 05Do not feed the fish — their diet is already perfect.
- 06Mind your fins: fin kicks cause a lot of damage.
The sun here is not the sun at home
Close to the equator, UV radiation on Bonaire is far stronger than you are used to — the index regularly hits 10 or higher. Without protection you burn within ten to fifteen minutes, even on cloudy days. Salt water and wind cool your skin, so you do not feel it happening.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher
- Apply at least 20 minutes before you get in
- Reapply every two hours, and after every snorkel
- Wear a UV shirt or rashguard while snorkelling
- Find shade between 12:00 and 15:00
- Children burn very fast — reapply more often
